The Victims: Al, Louise, Connie

Date of Last Visit: Sunday, March 27, 2005

Al and Louise were going to "The Boat Race" and wanted to know if I wanted to go. Vaguely confused by Rob Lowe and Oxford Blues, off I went, in their bright yellow car. We had this plan to go to Kew, but then we realized that that was way too far. So after a stop at an OTB in Clapham, we finally found ourselves somewhere by Chiswick bridge, just in time to see the dark blue team beat the light blue team. Ummm….I mean Oxford won.

So off we went for a late lunch. Al had the Time Out Eating & Drinking Guide, and told me to look up Wandsworth. I found The Ship, and off we went. It is so not stumble-across-able, but if you need some stuff from the B&Q and the recycling plant in Wandsworth, maybe you’ll find it.

Surprisingly, despite its location, it was very pleasant inside. Loved the glass ceiling/conservatory thing in the main room. We sat in the back and Connie was grateful for the open kitchen, in case they "spat in our food." I am not sure where Connie has been eating.

I had the chicken and parma ham. Parma ham conspicuously absent. Mashed sweet potatoes though–yuummmm. There was a lot of meat at the rest of the table–Al polished his plate clean–always a good sign. Connie and Louise got the same thing–which unfortunately I forget at this stage–but they also enjoyed it. Ah, and I forgot about the goat cheese starter….it was amazing! And so much better than the deep fried camembert that Louise ordered!

Service was sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. They forgot my beer. They forgot our water. Our waiter’s shift ended and he left, not a goodbye or anything. And we weren’t even a few bites into our entrees! The replacement waitress was very sweet and apologetic in a take charge kind of way. Ship, if you’re reading this, keep her!

The Verdict: A delightful afternoon with good food. Not great food,  but not bad food. Nice food, nice atmosphere. Good stuff. I’d go back, but I don’t know when I’ll be in Wandsworth again!
