I Heart New York

I Heart New York

An “Everything” bagel with veggie light cream cheese. And the New York Times. Saturday mornings don’t get much better.

We’ve done the burger craze. The steak craze. The burrito craze. How about a proper bagel craze?

Although I didn’t hit up H&H or Ess-a-bagel this morning, I will before I leave. There’s just enough space in my suitcase for a baker’s dozen.

Oh that looks delicious. I might have to go find one now!

Please don’t consign the bagel to one of those fads, that would be a terrible end. Because let’s be honest, they always end in tears. There’s a profusion of outlets and then slowly they dribble away to a mediocre handful.

And anyway, there are some excellent bagels in London. Whilst there may be some disagreement as to where is best, between Brick Lane and various outlets in Temple Fortune and Golders Green, our city is well served.

Funny you mention Ess-a-bagel (which never seems to get a mention in the same breath as H&H). The morning of my wedding day, I dragged all my bridesmaids to Ess-a-Bagel for a bagel and schmear before walking over to Frederic Fekkai for hair and makeup. Consider that combo the next time you’re there. : )

sadly, they only had one salt bagel left by the time I got there. And I was there by around 8 a.m. on a Sunday!

But I want salt bagles, Anthony! I haven't found them in London yet!

I’ve never understood Bagels. I’m going to NYC soon and was going to drop by Ess-a-Bagel (as I have before), but then realised I don’t see the point in the stodgy lumps of clarty dough. Don’t worry, I don’t think they’ll take off soon.
