Just bought a red velvet from a stall near my work and am not very impressed. Was surprised at the cost - £2.50 - for a cupcake which was somewhat on the small side and which is possibly the most disappointing red velvet I have ever tasted. It was unvenly baked, with unidetified lumps of gloop inside, the outside tasted slightly burnt and there was no discernable chocolate flavour which is a trademark of this recipe. Not enough frosting either (a shame as it may have helped to cover the slightly odd taste of the sponge).

I make these at home and whilst I'm not great at cakes was astonished to find that I prefer mine - a silver lining, I suppose!

If you are a fan of cupcakes and you are visiting the Brighton area, I would suggest the Angel Food Bakery which is based in The Lanes.

Perhaps an off day for Peggy's Cupcakes, but I certainly wouldn't buy these again.

Aha! I wondered when someone else would spot these. I met Rosalind (the lady who makes them) the other day - she was SO lovely! I'm blogging it soon for the real food festival. My favourite without doubt was the pear and cardamom..
