Opart Thai South Loop

1906 S. State Street
Chicago

The Victims: Many

The Damage: About $25 per person

The Background: I’ve been reading with interest as Tammi over at Chicago Bites has been eating her way through the Opart Thai menu at the Lincoln Square branch of Opart Thai.

Now that’s my kind of challenge.

So when I had the chance to get in on a big group meal with lots of food at Opart Thai South Loop — I said YES. At something like $25 per person for a veritable feast of a set menu, it was more or less a no-brainer. (I’ve been using that phrase a lot lately. Apologies.)

Ah, high expectations…always destined to fail…

Opart Thai Spring Rolls

After our slimy and overly-sauced vegetable rice rolls, we were served up an order of the one Chinese-American-Thai appetizer that I’ve never been able to reconcile myself with…

Crab Rangoon…crab rangoon. Deep-fried cream cheese and scallions.

Personally…I think there’s only one place cream cheese belongs and that’s on a bagel. Bleh.

Opart Thai Tiger CryTiger cry. Well, let me tell if…if I were a tiger and someone gave me a bowl of this dry, over-cooked nonsense (beef), I’d cry too. Hard.

Opart Thai Tofu Pad ThaiThis was the pad thai. The wettest pad thai I’ve ever had. Dry tofu too.

Opart Thai Red Curry ShrimpThe red curry shrimp was about the only dish I had seconds of. The ratio of curry to shrimp, however, was like a gazillion-to-one.

Opart Thai Basil ChickenThe Basil Chicken reminded me of cat food.

Opart Thai Fried Banana, Thai CustardThe fried banana was nice though.

Opart Thai South Loop Verdict

I think you get the point. I wasn’t a huge fan of Opart Thai South Loop. The Lincoln Square location must be better. Not sure if this place deserves a second chance?
