In reply to <a href="https://www.passportdelicious.com/london-update/#comment-7909">kaszeta</a>.

I debated PAYG as an interim step, but then I remembered how my dad and two of my friends kept calling my Chicago PAYG number for years after I got rid of it and decided to wait until I could get the real deal to announce my UK number. Maddy's was delicious. A little bit of a trip outside of central London though! (Although easy to get to.)

The phone issue I always handled with PAYG SIMS, since I can buy those with cold, hard, cash, and then in my Verizon (US) phone (since the Verizon ones are unlocked for GSM roaming), they just work. I then have a UK phone number for calling and texting, and a data plan.

And, as my brother found out, if you want to move to another plan, you can have the number transferred to your new phone.

Nice to know about Maddy's. Most London chippys leave me disappointed.
