Madeleines at St. John

by Krista

Madeleines at St. JohnI was never much one for madeleines.

Dry. Boring. Plain.

But in the last 30 days, I've has two excellent examples. First at Boundary in Shoreditch. Then last night at St. John. The St. John ones came piping hot out of the oven. Steaming almost. We had to pass them back and forth in our hands, valiantly hoping they'd cool enough for us to eat them. And when we did eat them, they were light, buttery and perfect.

Call me a convert.

Do you have a favourite place for madeleines? Where? I'm hooked!

That was fast, Krista. : )

I would put Bar Boulud’s madeleines up there with those of St. John’s. BB madeleines are miniature puffs of cakey goodness enlivened with citrus. BB serves a large portion for £4. (At St. John’s, they were 6 for £3.70).

I had some amazing tiny little madeleines a couple weeks ago as a pre-dessert course at Launceston Place. They had tiny flecks of rasberries inside and were served with a little pot of cream to dip. Yum

The wonders of mobile blogging! Makes it easy to be fast. And now that I've got ads on the blog, daily posting becomes more important!

I was wondering what the fuss was with all the people queuing up for them… Did you happen to try the food at St John’s lately? My relatives went recently and didn’t really enjoy the food.

They’re sooo easy to make (check out taste spotting and foodgawker for different varities even if it’s just for a drool)! Only special equiptment needed is the pan which is a tenner at John Lewis. They’re good because there is plenty of melted butter in there…

Definitely visit LP, Krista. I re-visited three weeks ago and had yet another marvelous time for a reasonable price (relative to the ambition of the resto).

Didn’t blog about it, though – I need to figure out a policy on places I visit semi-regularly.

Intresting to read that the ones at the Boundary were good as we had a cupcake and another cake from them (after a really good meal) and both were dry and tasteless! Next time I’ll try a madeleine – and get some to take away for my friends 8 year old son (they’re his absolute favourite cake)

We had a lot of food from the bar menu. Welsh rarebit! Yum!

Those madelines were so good – I think it was the fact that it they were hot out of the oven which helped. By the way so jealous of your comments where you say “sent from my ipad!”

Madeleines are always the winner at St John’s. We would go there specially for those during tea. Of course, there is the 15min wait for them but that only means that they are fresh out from the oven.

Have you tried their whole suckling pig before? There is no way I could get that huge a party to order one.
