The Victim: Myself

The Damage: Cheap. Like £4 quid?

The Background: Sometimes, I wake up with inexplicable cravings. I can only imagine what this will be like when I become pregnant. (Although odds on that are pretty low at the moment, although at 35 and 11/12ths, I am accepting applications.)

On this particular Saturday, I woke up with a craving for peanut chicken. Ghanaian peanut chicken from  Broadway market. I'd had it once before but never somehow wrote about it. Today was the day.

Towpath bikes

So I struck out on a little wander. Down the towpath along the Regent's Canal, on my way from Angel to Broadway Market. Along the way, I came across (wait for it) Towpath, the new little cafe. It was full of Swedish architects. (Or at least, they sure looked that way.) The queue was too long for me to hang around, but it looked like a peaceful place to collect oneself.

I eventually l made my way to Hackney, where I headed straight for Spinach & Agushi. They had big kettles of peanut chicken going. I placed my order for a small–this is some really heady, dense, rich stuff–served with their spicy rice.

With nowhere to sit, I propped myself up against an off-license and dug in. Smoking hot, warming, comforting, and of course, peanuty. Addictive, although once it cools off, it perhaps loses a bit of its initial appeal. This was not a bad thing because I couldn't finish it all anyhow. Too rich. But in the best possible way.

The Verdict: Perfect for that random craving every so often. This is great stuff.

Looks great – that towpath cafe is getting heaps of reviews – sounds like the place to be at the moment.

For Spinach & Agushi deliciousness in West London, head to Portobello Road market on Saturdays. Their stall can be found more or less opposite the Electric Cinema.

I LOVE Spinach & Agushi! I first discovered them at the Covent Garden 12 Days of Christmas food market in 2007, and can’t get enough of their peanut sauce.

In addition to Broadway Market and Portobello Market, they have a booth at Exmouth Market in Clerkenwell.

I’ve always wondered what this was like as I’ve passed their stall in Exmouth Market. Looks good and I’m liking their idea of ‘small’ too. Great meeting you yesterday but next time, we’ll go around the corner onto Kingsland Rd to eat.
