The Victim: Chrissy

The Damage: £55 each. I didn’t mean for that to happen on a Wednesday.

The Background: I know Chrissy through my friend Lisa from university, and I know Lisa because we spent a year in Oesterreich back in oh God–1993 and ’94! I am old. This will become important later.

Chrissy moved to London about a year and a half ago, and we keep meaning to get together. Well, whaddya know but I drop her an email about doing dinner the other week, and she tells me she’s moving back to New York! In two months. So time is of the essence.

NewYorkshirePudding had mentioned how much she liked Almeida, which was funny because I had walked by the other day and was thinking, "I should really go to the Almeida someday." (Strange, that I want to call it "the" Almeida, no?) So decision made.

The Entrance: It is large. And there’s a lot of space around the tables. And everyone had gray hair. Except for Chrissy and me. (Although…I do have a lot of gray hair too. I just cover it up every three months. OK, maybe four. In fact, I’m due for a touch-up and have just scheduled one for July 19th because, of course with my luck, my hair gal is on holiday for the first half of July.)

The Food: Chrissy has a great looking salad, and I go for the foie gras. Excellent choices, both. We are off to a good start. For mains, I opt for the sea bass and it is really really lovely. Well-presented, and perfectly prepared. Chrissy did seafood as well, and she was very pleased with her dish.

But we were both still a little disturbed by the amount of blue hair in the room.

The Desserts: Lemon tart for me. It was nice. And it came from a trolley full of tarts, which was fun. But I think I can do at least as good, if not better. 🙂 On the lemon tart, not the trolley.

The Service: Our server was a little smelly! Now what do you do when that happens?

The Verdict: Hmmm. I am not sure. Maybe with mom and dad. But not for getting together with a friend I haven’t seen in a while. The food is quite lovely, don’t get me wrong. I just felt a little young. And I am not so much anymore…

Well it is quite expensive for what it is.
Went once a couple of years ago – food OK but service dreadful.
Surrounding tables left uncleared – I really really hate that!
