The Victim: Craig

The Damage: £25 each?

The Background: Craig is moving to London from Australia! Craig was in London for a long stay back in 2004 when I had just moved to the UK, and we explored a few restaurants and bars together. It’s great to have him back! I thought it might be fun to do a "sushi crawl," but as it turned out, the bank holiday Monday was NOT the day to do this. The restaurants I had chosen were mostly closed. But we did get to Sakura, which is a place I’ve been wanting to try for a while.

The Entrance: I want to try Sakura because I hear the staff is REALLY rude. I can’t wait to be yelled at! We enter and before I can even make eye contact, a gentleman in a suit has loudly announced "Two? Follow me." I don’t call this rude. I call this EFFICIENT.

The Food: We place an order for some sashimi and some sushi. The sashimi is at the table pretty much immediately. It’s fresh and I have only one complaint: it seemed very cold, as if they had prepared all these plates in the morning and kept them in the fridge under cling film (aka saran wrap).

Sakura2Our sushi arrives and it too is nice. I’m pretty pleased with the whole experience. But I still want someone to yell at me. They refuse to oblige. We pay our bill and leave.

The Verdict: A decent choice if you’re around Oxford Circus and need a break.

An even better choice in that neck of the woods is Sakana Tei on Maddox Street – and the staff are lovely.

If you catch Sakura on a busy period you get given a little raffle ticket and have to queue patiently.

Worth the wait though, appetiser was nothing to write home about, nor was dessert, but the tempura was decent and the main of chicken teriyaki was very filling.

I’d point out that the food is not polished for the UK market like at Wagamamas and Satsuma, expect skin on your chicken and so on.
