How I Feel About Conveyer Belt Food

by Krista

Over the weekend (or, as they say here, WE! Kend), I had the opportunity/blessing/curse of eating at Yo! Sushi. Twice. (Maybe Yo! Sushi and We! Kend should get together.)

Firstly, I was shopping on Oxford Street on Saturday, and stopped into heaven, I mean Selfridge’s, and because I could not buy anything, I became immediately hungry. I have never been to the Selfrdige’s food court, but I’ve heard great things, so I went. And was SOOO disappointed. I mean, it was nice for someone’s dinner, but it didn’t have the cornucopia that I was expecting. And it’s Thanksgiving. So everyone should have a cornucopia.

I fancied some sashimi. (Oh my God. Did this Long Island girl actually say she “fancied” something??? Kill me now!) So I followed the signs to Yo! and filled myself.

The next day, I’m shopping, again. (No, I do not have a problem, I just need some stuff.) This time, I’m on Upper Street in Islington. I finish up at Borders and see the sign for Yo! in the distance. I’m again in the mood for some sashimi. I head up the escalator. This Yo! is very empty. I’m a bit worried. But the sign outside says they trash anything older than two hours. One day, I will test this. Again, I partook.

Here are my general thoughts on the Pros/Cons of Yo! Sushi…

1. Cleanliness. Very clean. You watch people make everything. They must be clean.
2. Unlimited water and green tea, although the green tea was nowhere in shouting distance in either place.
3. Unlimited miso soup. Yummy. Although at the Yo! Islington, I had to ask for my miso once too many times.
4. No pressure to pay a service charge for uh, no service.

What I don’t like about Yo!

1. The (lack of) variety. It wasn’t super-crowded when I was at either Yo!, so perhaps that explains it. But here was an awful lot of salmon and edamame passing me by.
2. The speed. This is fast food. Maybe it seemed faster because I was by myself, but I felt like I was in and out in minutes.
3. The competiveness. There were some skinny girls there and they only had three plates. I had six. Plus miso soup. I felt fat.
4. The cost…17.50 the first time, 20.75 the second!

The Verdict: I love sashimi. At Yo!, your conveyor belt options are limited when it comes to sashimi. In general, I feel like Yo! is beginner’s sushi. I guess I’m advanced???
