The Victims: Canadia Boy, Julie, Renee, Jeff, and oh my why can’t I remember who else was there? I feel like there was one other person with us?
The Damage: Unknown!
Julia and Canadia Boy has organized to meet up at The Angelica in Islington. Renee is allergic to everything, and it was a Friday night in London. My point is that we had three factors to consider in choosing our restaurant: walking distance from The Angelica, food allergies (resulting in a preference for meat, potatoes, and pasta), and making a reservation somewhere because of the things I enjoy least in life is wandering around, looking for someplace to eat when it’s a Friday night and no one will take you because you don’t have a booking.
We hopped on the internet and Metrogusto appeared to be the answer. After a pint at The Angelica, we walked up to Theburton Street. We were greeted at the door of Metrogusto very, very warmly by the proprietor, who knew exactly who we were. That was nice. He’s a smart man. He showed us to our table in the back, and our Italian-speaking Chinese waiter took our order, which was cool.
Canadia Boy chose the wine, but then got embarrassed when he thought there was something wrong with the wine (it did smell a bit musty). He sent the wine back, and the proprietor claimed there was nothing wrong with it. (As he would.) But then the proprietor was SO nice and brought Canadia Boy a glass of something extra special amazing so he didn’t feel bad about being a jerk. (Canadia, if you’re reading this, you know I’m kidding!!!) I wish we had written down the name of the wine because it was great.
Entrees…I went with my pate and toast. It was great. Jeff got a mussel soup, which looked fun. For mains, I ordered the venison risotto, which was just okay. Julie went for the gnocchi, which was very tasty (gnocchi always is), but a bit plain for me as it was just in tomato sauce. All in all, everyone seemed reasonably happy.
The Verdict: Didn’t knock my socks off. But good and fun and great service. The maitre’d was fantastic.
