Why Writing a Food-ish Blog is Hard

by Krista

I was in Florida for a week last week, so you’ll pardon the lack of posts. But my sojourn had me thinking. Writing a restaurant-y blog is hard. Sometimes, this means writing about places you don’t like–like that Malaysian Place we went to the other week. Or it means writing about chains, and well there’s not much fun in that. (I do love Carluccio’s though.) And it means you have to have a really great memory to capture what everyone ate effectively, descriptively, and interestingly.

Other thoughts–if you all get the same dish, that’s not fun to review. So this means you have to sometimes get what you might not want to get. (The things I eat for this blog!)

And if you really like duck and foie gras like I do–well, you can’t always write about duck and foie gras.

And if you’re a procrastinator, forget it! You can’t let weeks go by before writing a review. So for example, at the very beginning of May, I had a great meal at Bonds in the Threadneedle Hotel in the City with Bevin, Tao, and David, but I never got around to writing about it. At this stage, I still somewhat remember what we all had to eat, and I remember it was good. So I will have to think really hard about everything in a quiet place, and then put my fingers to the keyboard. (I had the foie gras and the duck! Surprise!!!)

Then there are nights like last night, when all our plans went awry. I went up to Belsize Park to meet Julie and Lee and check out The Washington. No luck–packed, and no one eating. (Always a bad sign.) So then we wandered over to The Belsize–less packed, lots of people eating, aging rock stars in the corner, but still couldn’t get a table. We ended up at Black & Blue. Bummer. The finest of intentions!

You eat, you write, you learn.
